Digitisation is transforming our study of popular culture. Thanks to this technology we can access the teaching materials used by Jane Johnson, née Russell, 1706-1759, of Witham-on-the-Hill, Lincolnshire, primarily for the instruction of her son, George William Johnson, 1740?-1814 (High Sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1784), and presumably for the two other sons and daughter as well.
Jane Johnson was the wife of the Rev. Woolsey Johnson, 1696?-1756, who built Witham Hall in 1752, and the daughter of Richard Russell. She was evidently a born teacher and today would have a distinguished career in education.
The Jane Johnson collection is held by the Lilly Library, University of Indiana, and can be accessed here (click on the links in the sidebar) and here. I hope you enjoy trawling through this fascinating material.
There is an interesting discussion of the material here.
